As the weather turns cooler, there are still lots of activities to enjoy at the Johnson Mill.
COWBOY POETRY GATHERING is the "Hot Ticket" for Fall. Talented and humorous Cowboy Poets gather from all over the county- and Canada- to share their amazing creations. On the program for 2006 are Waddie Mitchel,Michael Martin Murphy, The Bar J Wranglers, Doris Daley (our personal favorite), Rich O’Brien and many, many others. Don’t miss the Eddie Deen’s Famous East Texan BBQ, the Horsemanship Clinic, and Buckaroo Gear Show, Mt. Man Trader Camp, etc. Come prepared to laugh ’til you cry. Perormances are continuous November 7 through November 12, culminating in a Cowboy Church Gospel Hour on Sunday, November 12th. Tickens can be purchased through Days Market in Heber City, 435-654-2352. Tickets will sell out, so book in advance. We also will sell out; reserve rooms early.
BIRD WATCHING continues to be an entertaining activity here at the Johnson Mill. The Fall Migration which starts about the first week in September promises to bring some interesting birds as they journey south. With the varied terrain the Mill offers such as ponds and streams, adjacent wet lands, meadows and vegetation attractive to many birds, over 70 varieties of birds have been spotted on the Mill property itself. The Audubon Society comes to the Mill on the third Wednesday of each month. (Bring your own binoculars).
FLY FISHING is always a safe bet at the Mill. With a four acre rainbow-stocked spring-fed lake, five smaller ponds, spring creeks and waterfalls the fishing is always great. Enjoy an especially fun day by hiring one of our guides for a half or full day. (They know all the great spots and what fish are eating for dinner these days.) Everyone who hires one of our guides has fun all day. www.utahflyfish.com THE HEBER VALLEY RAILROAD offers rides down the picturesque Provo Canyon paralleling the Provo River as is slowly snakes down to Vivian Park, passing numerous waterfalls along the way. The fall colors are expected to peak sometime between Sept. 14- October 4. One may experience the fragrance of fall riding in an outdoor car. Snacks are available for purchase on the train. A CAR TOUR is always enjoyable this time of year. Take a forty minute car drive- (whoa, its a dirt road!) but a wonderful picturesque drive to Cascade Springs. Hike around the springs- either the mile or the mile and a half walk, see the water bubbling up right out of the ground with large rainbow trout swimming at your feet. Then get back in your car and take the back roads through the beautiful Aspen Forest and drop into Sundance for a delicious lunch at one of the restaurants at Robert Redford’s resort.
HORSEBACKRDING is a perfect fall activity. Saddle up and head on out for a scenic 1 to 4 hour ride, along an original game trail high on the south slope of Tate Creek Canyon. Visit a secluded mountain meadow and return on a wagon trail used by early settlers to Soldier Hollow. Add the optional chuck wagon dinner for the “real western experience”. The dinner is extraordinary! Call Rocky Mountain Outfitters at 435-654-1665 www.rockymtnoutfitters.com
HOT AIR BALLOONING can enable you to enjoy the fall color extravaganza from the air in an exciting Hot Air Balloon Ride taking off from the Mill Property. If you have not experienced a Hot Air Balloon Ride you have a real treat in store. The ride is exhilarating, the view extraordinary! Call Wasatch Ballooning at 435-657-2233
